Champion and multiple graded stakes producer Griffe de Paris (Brz), the dam of Grade 1 winner and California sire Global Hunter (Arg), died on May 8 at Haras Carampangue in Argentina. She was 24.
A daughter of 1978 Argentine Quadruple Crown winner Telescopico out of April in Paris, by Locris, Griffe de Paris was barren, leaving two unraced foals by last season’s Argentine leading sire Orpen, including a November-born filly named Griffe Sureña.
Retired from racing in 1992 after achieving eight victories from 19 starts at Cidade Jardim Race Course in Sao Paulo, including the 1991 Grande Premio Organizacao Sulamericana de Fomento Ao Puro Sangue de Carrera (Brz-G1) and three additional Group 3 events, Griffe de Paris passed on her best qualities to her foals.
In addition to Global Hunter, she produced Brazilian Group 1 winner Lady de Paris, Argentine Group 1 winner Genereux, Brazilian Group 2 winner House Of Lords, and Brazilian Group 3 winner King de Paris.
Griffe de Paris produced 13 foals, including eight winners, five graded stakes winners, and two Grade 1 producers for progeny earnings of $981,119.
