Kentucky stallion Stormello dies at age seven

STORMELLO

Grade 1 winner and Vinery Kentucky freshman sire Stormello was euthanized on Tuesday at Hagyard Equine Medial Institute in Lexington following complications from colic.

The seven-year-old by Stormy Atlantic out of the Carson City mare Wilshewed entered stud in 2008 for an advertised fee of $15,000. One of the members of the 36 two-year-olds in his first crop—a filly named Stormy Donna Gail—has started but is winless in two starts.

“He was gorgeous,” said William Currin, who trained Stormello and owned and bred him with Al Eisman. “His enormous heart for racing thrilled us. We look forward to seeing his babies on the race track, and we cherish our memories of him.”

Stormello posted three wins, one second, and three seconds in two seasons and earned $700,100. He won the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and Norfolk Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2) in 2006 and started in the 2007 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

This article couldn't convey the sadness all of us who knew and loved Stormello felt. He had the heart of a winner and the spirit of a fighter. The horse business is no place for little boys in short pants.
