Glitterman, who assured himself a spot in racing history when he set a world record sprinting at Hialeah Park, died on April 14 at Old Friends Thoroughbred retirement facility in Georgetown, Kentucky.
A 26-year-old pensioned stallion by Dewan, Glitterman was euthanized because of debilitating arthritis.
“He was a great champ, a great sire, and a great old friend,” said Michael Blowen, president and founder of Old Friends. “He was stoic to the end, and we will miss him very much.”
While also a successful sire, Glitterman probably will best be remembered for completing 5 1/2 furlongs in a world-record time of 1:01.60 on the Hialeah turf. Glitterman won nine of 25 career starts and captured five stakes races, including the 1990 Philadelphia Park Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3).
From 575 starters, Glitterman sired 467 winners and 33 stakes winners, including Grade 1 winners Balto Star and Glitter Woman. Glitterman last stood at Nathan Fox and Richard Kaster's Wafare Farm near Midway, Kentucky, but was pensioned in 2005 due to fertility problems.
