Alabama-bred leader Comalagold dies at 11

Posted: Tuesday, April 05, 2011 1:28 PM

Comalagold, a four-time stakes winner and the all-time leading earner among female Alabama-breds, died on April 2 because of foaling complications. She was 11.

Bobby Pruitt bred and owned Comalagold, a daughter of his sire, Royal Empire, out of the Foolish Pleasure mare Splendora.

Comalagold earned $311,080 over six seasons from 2002 to 2007, notching ten wins and 11 second-place finishes in 48 career starts. She swept the Alabama Belle Stakes at Louisiana Downs four times, from 2003 to 2006.

“She was an icon of Alabama breeders and a loved member of Bobby’s farm, Flying P Ranch Thoroughbreds in Hope Hull, Alabama,” said Daryl Tuttle, secretary of the Alabama Thoroughbred Breeders Racing Association. “Her spirit and determination will be greatly missed.”
