The al Thani family of Qatar has purchased English classic winner and recent French Group 1 winner Makfi for stud duty in England.
The transaction will take effect after Makfi competes in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1).
“It is a dream come true to agree a deal to acquire a horse of Makfi’s caliber,” said David Redvers, bloodstock and racing adviser to the al Thani family. “Few other racehorses retire with such credentials as a sire—he has it all. He ticks every box. To have him to stand at Tweenhills, in England, is a massive boost when he could have so easily been lost from Europe, and I am incredibly grateful to my clients, the al Thani, family for investing so seriously in our industry at a time when shrewd investment is so badly required.”
The three-year-old Dubawi colt out of Dhelaal, by Green Desert, will continue to race in the colors of Mathieu Offenstadt and partners this fall and will stand the 2011 season at Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire, England.
The al Thani family mostly races in England.
Makfi has won four of five career starts for trainer Mikel Delzangles, including the Stanjames.com Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) on May 1 at Newmarket. Most recently, he defeated two-time Mile winner Goldikova in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le- Buffard-Jacques le Marois (Fr-G1) on August 15 at Deauville. He is slated for the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Fr-G1) on Sunday.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Shadwell Estate Co. Ltd. bred Makfi in Great Britain, and Ofenstadt and partners bought him for $44,842 at the Tattersalls Autumn horses in training sale. He is out of an unraced half sister to European champion and Irish sire Alhaarth, by Unfuwain.
