High Award stalked the pace in the opener on Sunday at the Curragh and took over inside the final furlong to win the five-furlong maiden race by three-quarters of a length and become the first career winner for multiple Group 1 winner Holy Roman Emperor.
Trained by Tommy Stack for Susan Magnier, High Award covered the distance in 1:06.71 on turf rated as soft to prevail as the 9-to-2 third betting choice. High Award is out of 1998 Airlie Coolmore Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1) winner Tarascon, by Tirol. Demi O’Byrne purchased him on behalf of Magnier, who also raced Holy Roman Emperor, for $687,627 at the 2008 Tattersalls December foal sale.
A six-year-old by Danehill out of multiple stakes producer L’On Vite, by Secretariat, Holy Roman Emperor stands for approximately $23,710 (17,500 euros) at Coolmore Stud in Ireland. He has 113 two-year-olds in his first crop.
Holy Roman Emperor is from the family of two-time Canadian Horse of the Year L’Enjoleur, Canadian Horse of the Year Fanfreluche, Canadian champions La Voyageuse and Medaille d’Or, and leading Australian sires Flying Spur and Encosta de Lago.
Holy Roman Emperor won four times from seven starts as a juvenile, including victories in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-Grand Criterium (Fr-G1) and Independent Waterford Wedgwood Phoenix Stakes (Ire-G1).
Considered a top European classics contender entering his three-year-old season, Holy Roman Emperor was retired to serve as a stallion replacement for two-time champion and English classic winner George Washington (Ire), who had fertility problems in his first breeding season.
