Hornblower first winner for First Samurai

Posted: Saturday, June 19, 2010 7:09 PM

Swift Thoroughbreds’ Hornblower broke alertly and tracked the pace, rallied three wide on the second turn, and drew clear to a 1 ¼-length victory in the opening race on Saturday at Hastings Race Course to become the first career winner for Central Kentucky stallion First Samurai.

Trained by Dino Condilenios, the dark bay or brown colt completed the six-furlong maiden special weight race in 1:12.83 on a track rated as fast in his second career start. Bred in Kentucky by Denlea Park, he is out of the winning Alysheba mare Crown of Sheba and is a half brother to Grade 2 winner Spice Island, the dam of Florida Derby (G1) winner and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) runner-up Ice Box.

A seven-year-old by Giant’s Causeway out of multiple stakes winner Freddie Frisson, by Dixieland Band, First Samurai stands for $30,000 at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. He has 88 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Trained by Frank Brothers for Lansdon Robbins III and Bruce Lunsford, First Samurai earned $915,075 in two seasons. He won five of eight starts, including the 2005 Champagne (G1) and Hopeful (G1) Stakes and the ’06 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2).

Amazing horse! Absolutely loved working with him in "05". Amazing talent, looks and mindset! Hope he passes on all of these qualities to his foals! No one can go wrong with a storm cat line and with Giant's Causeway, best son of storm cat at stud. There is defitinite potential to an empire in the making!!!
