Givemesixsteps first winner for Fire Slam

Posted: Friday, July 30, 2010 4:09 PM

Martha Gonzalez’s Givemesixsteps took the lead in the final furlong and surged to a 2½-length win in the third race at Woodbine on Friday to become the first winner for freshman sire Fire Slam.

Trained by Nicholas Gonzalez, the two-year-old gelding covered 5½ furlongs under Emma-Jayne Wilson in 1:06.36 on the synthetic Polytrack surface. He is the first winner from two starters out Boscobelle, by Polish Numbers, from the family of multiple graded stakes winner Biogio’s Rose.

A nine-year-old by Grand Slam out of Miss Firefly, by Salt Lake, Fire Slam stood the 2010 season for $2,500 at Elite Thoroughbreds in Folsom, Louisiana. He has 18 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Fire Slam posted six wins and three runner-up finishes from 16 career starts and earned $687,271 in four seasons. His best season came as a three-year-old in 2004 when he won the Riva Ridge Breeders’ Cup (G2), Lecomte (G3), Matt Winn, and Don Bernhardt Stakes.
