Grade 1 winner, sire Salt Lake euthanized

Posted: Tuesday, July 20, 2010 5:00 PM

Grade 1 winner and prodigious sire Salt Lake was euthanized on Tuesday, several weeks after undergoing colic surgery.

The 21-year-old by Deputy Minister stood at the Mabee family’s Golden Eagle Farm in Ramona, California, from 2006-‘10 after spending 13 years at John T. L. Jones Jr.’s Walmac International in Lexington. He sired Canadian champion Fantasy Lake and Argentine champion Salt Champ along with Grade 1 winner Ordway and 66 other stakes winners. From 15 crops of racing age, he had 779 winners from 969 starters who earned $55,715,204 through Monday.

"He had minor colic surgery a few weeks ago and appeared to initially recover well,” Golden Eagle Farm general manager Janine McCullough said. “However, within a week of being home, his condition started to worsen and we sent him back to the clinic.

“We did everything we could, Salt Lake was a fighter, but he finally told me it was time. Great horses like him will always tell you when.”

Winner of the 1991 Hopeful (G1), Cowdin (G2), and Tremont Breeders’ Cup (G3) Stakes as well as the ’92 King’s Bishop Stakes (G2) and Fall Highweight Handicap (G2), Salt Lake won seven of 21 starts during two seasons on the track and earned $536,218.

Salt Lake will be buried at Golden Eagle next to multiple Grade 1 winner and recent Racing Hall of Fame inductee Best Pal and Grade 3 winner General Meeting, McCullough said.

I now own Salt Lake's son, Salty Prince, who was given to me in February of 2010.
Hanging in the barn where I groom my beloved Salty is a magnificent photo of Salt Lake to which I often "show" Salty, to remind him, "this is your dad."
I am very saddened by the loss... My sympathy to all who cared and loved Salt Lake.

Of all the fabulous thoroughbreds, it is the photo of Salt Lake that sits above my desk. My thoughts are with Golden Eagle Farm and all those that were close to him.

I just bred my mare, Visayan Princess, to him and was so thankful to have a shot at having a foal by such a prolific stallion. I took some nice pictures of him when I visited Golden Eagle and he looked so amazing a couple of months ago. Well, my foal will born around Feb 20th next year. My prayers are with Golden Eagle Farm and their staff. They treated me so well and I know how much this hurts.
