Sefapiano, sire of multiple graded stakes winners Jonesboro, Rolling Sea, and Humoristic, died of a heart attack on January 2 at Landlock Equine Center in Coushatta, Louisiana. He was 21.
“He wasn’t sick or anything; it was just one of those deals,” Landlock owner Daniel Chicola said. “We were expecting to have him for the breeding season; I know a lot of people really liked him.”
By Fappiano out of Grade 1 winner Sefa’s Beauty, by Lt. Stevens, Sefapiano posted two wins and two seconds from four starts in 1992 in his only season of racing for owner and co-breeder Farid Sefa.
Sefapiano stood his first season at stud for a private fee at Sefa’s Farm in Holly, Michigan, where he stood for his first four seasons. He moved to Dixiana Farm in Central Kentucky in 1999 and stood there for two seasons before a three-year stint at Spendthrift Farm.
After standing at three different farms in three years from 2004 to ’06, Sefapiano settled in at Landlock in ‘07 for his final three breeding seasons. Sefapiano is the sire of 165 winners from 222 starters that have earned $14,525,260 through January 29. Sefapiano is the sire of four graded stakes winners and 22 stakes winners from 13 crops ages three and older. He has 14 two-year-olds and seven yearlings.
Jonesboro has won ten stakes, including four graded stakes, and earned $1,466,685.
“He was one of the nicest breeding stallions you’ll ever have at your farm—nice manners and just a great breeder,” Chicola said. “For his age, he was just an exceptional stallion … just a great breeding horse.”
