Two-time Horse of the Year Curlin was represented by his first reported foal on January 12 when Zophie, by Hawkster, produced a filly at Burleson Farms in Midway, Kentucky.
Zophie is a multiple winner who produced Appealing Zophie, the 2006 Spinaway Stakes (G1) winner who went on to win the Silverbulletday Stakes (G3) at three and place in three other stakes races. She also produced Kal El, who set a track record at Mountaineer Race Track for 4 1/2 furlongs in :49.06.
Curlin stands at Lane’s End alongside his leading sire, Smart Strike. The six-year-old out of Sherriff’s Deputy, by Deputy Minister, covered 131 mares in his initial season for an advertised fee of $75,000. He stands for $60,000 this year.
Curlin won 11 of 16 starts and earned $10,501,800—a record for a North American-based Thoroughbred—during his two-year campaign in which he won a Horse of the Year title in both 2007 and ’08.
