Following a single season in Central Kentucky, Grade 3 winner Chelokee will stand at the University of Arizona Equine Center in Tucson as part of the university’s Thoroughbred breeding program.
The six-year-old Cherokee Run horse out of Dixie Ghost, by Silver Ghost, will stand for $2,500.
In 2009, Chelokee covered 24 mares for an advertised fee of $7,500 at Vinery Kentucky in Lexington.
Owner Centennial Farm donated Chelokee to the university, according to Daily Racing Form.
Chelokee underwent surgery to fuse his right front fetlock after he broke down in the Alysheba Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs in May 2008. He won the 2007 Barbaro Stakes at Pimlico Race Course and Northern Dancer Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs and finished third in the Florida Derby (G1).
Bred by Gulf Coast Farms Bloodstock, Chelokee won five of ten starts and earned $385,785. He is a half brother to Grade 2 winner and sire Salute the Sarge and stakes winner Mymich.
