Grade 1 winner Square Eddie has been retired with a suspensory injury and will stand at Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, California.
By two-time leading sire Smart Strike, Square Eddie finished his career with two wins, three seconds, and two thirds in 12 starts and earned $819,366 in two seasons. He is out of multiple stakes-placed winner Forty Gran, by El Gran Senor.
“He’s going to stand for a private fee his first year,” said Jamie McCalmont, advisor to Square Eddie’s owner, J. Paul Reddam. “When you’re going to go to stud at the beginning of the breeding season, you haven’t really had time to market the horse, so we’re more concerned with getting quality mares than a huge income in his first year at stud.”
Group 3-placed in England, Square Eddie was purchased privately by Reddam as a two-year-old and made quite a splash in his U.S. debut, winning the Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity (G1) by 4 3/4 lengths at Keeneland Race Course in October 2008.
Square Eddie subsequently was transferred to trainer Doug O’Neill and followed with a runner-up finish to eventual champion Midshipman in the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) to solidify his position among the elite of his division.
He finished second in the San Rafael Stakes (G3) and third in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G2) among six starts as a three-year-old.
“We’d be interested in standing him in the Southern Hemisphere if the right opportunity came about,” McCalmont said. “Paul Reddam is very fond of this horse and we have a number of mares at Vessels. I think he’ll be sending up to 25 mares to the horse, so he will get a wide variety of mares. I was watching his races last week and he was quite talented.”
