Multiple classics-placed graded stakes winner Denis of Cork will enter stud at Vinery in Summerfield, Florida, for the 2010 season. The five-year-old by Harlan’s Holiday will stand for $2,500.
Denis of Cork finished third in the 2008 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and second that year in the Belmont Stakes (G1) after winning the Southwest Stakes (G3).
“Denis of Cork showed a lot of class on the racetrack,” Vinery President Tom Ludt said. “He won three races, including a graded stakes, and placed in two classics in only six starts. He’s by a stallion who continues to prove himself, and we are very pleased to stand him.”
Trained by David Carroll, Denis of Cork raced for William K. and Suzanne Warren, who also campaigned 2005 Horse of the Year Saint Liam. The Warrens purchased the colt for $250,000 at the 2007 Barretts Equine Ltd. March sale of selected two-year-olds in training.
Denis of Cork won his first three starts at three different tracks. He broke his maiden at two in November at Churchill Downs, won his first race at three at Fair Grounds, and then scored his first stakes victoryat Oaklawn Park in the one-mile Southwest. Denis of Cork finished third to Big Brown in the Derby, then was runner-up to Da’ Tara in the Belmont Stakes five weeks later.
Sidelined after the Belmont, Denis of Cork had returned to training and was expected to race at the current Fair Grounds meeting until a soft-tissue injury was discovered after a breeze in early January and the decision was made to retire him. He concluded his career with a record of three wins, one second, and one third from six lifetime starts and earnings of $613,252.
Out of the Unbridled mare Unbridled Girl, Denis of Cork is the leading earner for Harlan’s Holiday.
