D.C. International, Japan Cup winner Le Glorieux dies

Le Glorieux (GB), who packed together victories in the Washington D.C. International (G1) and Japan Cup (Jpn-G1) and a second-place finish in the Man o’ War Stakes (G1) in fall 1987, has died in France at age 26.
According to Racing Post, the Cure the Blues stallion died on August 19 at owner Werner Wolf’s Haras du Logis Saint-Germain in Normandy.
Le Glorieux won the Grosser Preis Von Berlin (Ger-G1) and two other German group races as a three-year-old in 1987 before embarking on an international campaign that began with a second-place finish by a half-length to eventual champion Theatrical (Ire) in the Man o’ War at Belmont Park. A week later, Le Glorieux prevailed by a neck over Great Communicator in the $750,000 Washington D.C. International at Laurel Park.
The next month, Le Glorieux beat multiple Grade 1 winner Southjet in the Japan Cup at Tokyo. Trained by Robert Collet, he remains the only Japan Cup winner who had been based in France.
Petra Bloodstock bred Le Glorieux, who stood at Haras du Mezeray and later at Haras du Logis Saint-Germain. He sired 13 stakes winners in ten crops, including Glorieux Dancer (Fr) a Group 3 winner who finished who finished second in the 1992 Laurel Futurity (G3).
