Posted: Sunday, September 06, 2009 7:21 PM

After finishing fourth in her career debut, Goddess Angel scored decisively in her second start with a 5 1/4-length victory in the opening race on Sunday at Timonium to give Maryland-based freshman sire St Averil his first career winner.

Trained by Dale Capuano for owner Costas Triantafilos, the chestnut filly completed the 6 1/2-furlong maiden claiming race in 1:22.05 under Joshua Navarro. Bred in Maryland, Goddess Angel is out of the stakes-winning Double Zeus mare Double Artemis.

An eight-year-old by Saint Ballado out of multiple graded stakes winner Avie’s Fancy, by Lord Avie, St Averil stood the 2009 season for $4,500 at Bonita Farm in Darlington, Maryland. He has 25 two-year-olds in his first crop.

St Averil won four of 13 career starts and earned $328,742 in three seasons. He won the Santa Catalina Stakes (G2) as a three-year-old in 2004 and finished second in the San Felipe Stakes (G2). As a two-year-old, St Averil finish second to Lion Heart in the Hollywood Futurity (G1).
