Grade 1 winner Visionaire to stand at Crestwood

Grade 1 winner Visionaire will begin his stud career in 2009 at Pope McLean’s Crestwood Farm in Lexington.

The four-year-old Grand Slam colt out of Scarlet Tango, by French Deputy, will stand for $7,500 as the property of Team Valor International and Vision Racing, the partnership that raced him.

Visionaire rallied from last to win the seven-furlong NetJets King’s Bishop Stakes (G1) in August 2008 by 2¼ lengths in 1:21.94. He also won the two-turn Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct in March 2008 for trainer Michael Matz.

“Visionaire is an exceptional individual and his conformation, as well as his winning a key race for a stallion prospect, has given us the confidence to stand him,” Team Valor principal Barry Irwin said. “We feel that breeders will want to use him when they inspect him in person.

“Since it was decided by the partners to stand the horse for our own account, it was vitally important to Team Valor and Vision Racing’s Brandon Perry and John Stephens of Vision Racing to place him where he would be respected for his accomplishments, and the stallion manager could be counted on for a full effort in promoting him and working with those breeders interested in using Visionaire. In the McLean family, we feel that we have selected the right partner for us.”

Bred in Kentucky by Reiley McDonald, Visionaire won five of 12 career starts and earned $465,882.
