Jerry and Peggy Woods will welcome a pair of well-bred stallions to their roster at Woodstead Farm in Washington next year in the A.P. Indy colt Alaazo and the Cherokee Run horse Malt Magic, both of whom were high-priced purchases as yearlings.
Ahmed Zayat campaigned both horses in the name of his Zayat Stables after purchasing them at the Keeneland September yearling sale. Zayat purchased Malt Magic for $320,000 in 2005 and Alaazo for $350,000 the following year.
Domino Stud bred Malt Magic in Kentucky out of the unraced Last Tycoon (Ire) mare La Cucina (Ire), dam of multiple Grade 2 winner Miss Isella and multiple graded stakes winner and sire Sir Cherokee. Malt Magic won two of 11 starts with his victories coming by a combined 17 1/4 lengths.
Alaazo closed out his career by finishing second in both the Greenwood Cup and Turfway Park Fall Championship (G3) Stakes, both at 1 1/2 miles. He won three of 13 career starts.
Alexander, Groves, and Matz bred Alaazo in Kentucky out of the multiple graded stakes winner Atelier, by Deputy Minister, a family that includes 1983 Broodmare of the Year Courtly Dee and her two-year-old champion daughter, Althea.
The deal to stand Alaazo and Malt Magic at Woodstead was brokered by Brett St. Amand Bloodstock.
