Red Ransom, the veteran sire of 98 stakes winners who stood on three different continents, died on Saturday at Vinery Australia from complications related to abdominal surgery. He was 22.
By Roberto out of the winning Damascus mare Arabia, Red Ransom began his career at stud in 1991 at Vinery Kentucky after winning two of three starts for owner-breeder Paul Mellon’s Rokeby Stable and trainer Mack Miller. His career cut short due to injury, Red Ransom stood his first season for $7,500—a fee that increased tenfold within ten years thanks to the success of his progeny, such as 2000 champion turf female Perfect Sting.
Red Ransom began shuttling to Vinery Australia in 1999 and proved popular with breeders, returning each subsequent year for the Southern Hemisphere season.
Other top progeny of Red Ransom include 2007 European champion sprinter Red Clubs, 2003 Vodafone Epsom Oaks (Eng-G1) winner Casual Look, and 2006 Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) winner Electrocutionist among 57 group or graded stakes winners from 16 crops of racing age.
He has amassed 869 winners from 1,323 starters that have earned $80,282,304 through November 14.
Southern Hemisphere Group 1 winners sired by Red Ransom include All American, Duporth, Charge Forward, Typhoon Tracy, Onemorenomore, and Red Dazzler.
In 2004, he moved to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Dalham Hall Stud and stood there for five Northern Hemisphere seasons while continuing to shuttle to Vinery Australia.
