WinStar Farm’s homebred multiple Grade 1 winner Colonel John has been retired and will stand the 2010 breeding season at WinStar in Versailles, Kentucky.

The four-year-old Tiznow colt out of the winning Turkoman mare Sweet Damsel won six of 15 starts, including the 2008 Travers Stakes (G1) and Santa Anita Derby (G1), with three runner-up finishes and earned $1,779,012 under the guidance of trainer Eoin Harty. He won grade 1 races on both dirt and synthetic surfaces and captured a stakes in his only career start on the turf.

Colonel John was sidelined by a lung abscess early in 2009 but returned to win one of four starts, the Wickerr Stakes on July 31 at Del Mar, and finished fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on November 7 at Santa Anita Park in his most recent outing.

“We wholeheartedly believe in Colonel John and intend to fully support him with our program," WinStar President Doug Cauthen said. "His resume is complete. … He's a big, athletic horse and has everything we are looking for in a classic sire prospect.”

Colonel John has arrived at the farm and is available for inspection.
