Frank Stronach’s homebred Grade 1 winner Citronnade died on April 1 from complications following colic surgery. She was six.
The Lemon Drop Kid mare out of Canadian Broodmare of the Year Primarily, by Lord At War (Arg), developed severe colic shortly after her first foal, by Ghostzapper, was stillborn on March 1.
Eric Hamelback, manager of Stronach’s Adena Springs Farm in Paris, Kentucky, said Citronnade underwent surgery that went well but later had a major complication.
Citronnade registered five graded stakes victories for trainer Bobby Frankel in 2007, including the Gamely Stakes (G1) at Hollywood Park. Her other stakes wins came in the 2006 Audrey Skirball-Kenis Stakes at Hollywood Park, Graceful Darby Stakes at Belmont, and ’07 San Gorgonio (G2) and Santa Ana (G2) Handicaps at Santa Anita Park and Beverly Hills (G2) and Dahlia (G2) Handicaps at Hollywood.
Bred in Kentucky, Citronnade was a half sister to two Sovereign Award winners: Primaly, Canada’s champion two-year-old filly for 1997, and Poetically, the 2000 champion two-year-old filly.
Primarily, also the dam of Grade 3 winner and Ontario sire Whiskey Wisdom, died in 2005 from injuries she suffered in a paddock accident.
