Long Lashes first winner for Rock Hard Ten

Posted: Friday, June 26, 2009 4:02 PM

Long Lashes raced in fifth, surged into contention with a furlong to go, and won the Ballygallon Stud Balanchine Stakes in her career debut on Friday at the Curragh to become the first winner for Central Kentucky-based freshman sire Rock Hard Ten.

Bred in Kentucky by Robert LaPenta and Nick Zito and owned the McElroy Syndicate, the two-year-old filly won by 2½ lengths under jockey Fran Berry and covered six furlongs in 1:15.24 on turf rated as soft. Long Lashes, trained by Jessica Harrington, is the second winner from as many starters out of the unraced Boundary mare Border Dispute.

Eight-year-old Rock Hard Ten, by Kris S. and out of French champion two-year-old filly Tersa, by Mr. Prospector, has 82 two-year-olds in his first crop. He stands for an advertised fee of $30,000 at Lane’s End in Versailles, Kentucky.

Rock Hard Ten won seven of 11 career starts and earned $1,870,380 during a two-year racing career. He won the 2004 Malibu Stakes (G1) and ’05 Santa Anita Handicap (G1) as well as the ’05 Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2) and Strub Stakes (G2) and ’04 Swaps Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2). He did not have enough graded stakes earnings to start in the 2004 Kentucky Derby (G1) but finished second to Derby winner Smarty Jones in the Preakness Stakes (G1). Trained by Richard Mandella for co-owner and breeder Madeleine Paulson, Rock Hard Ten also finished third in the ’04 Santa Anita Derby.
