Derickhand first winner for Lunarpal

Brett Brinkman’s Derickhand sprinted clear early, briefly lost his lead on the turn before again pushing ahead, and drove to a 1½-length victory in a five-furlong maiden claiming race on Saturday at Evangeline Downs to become the first winner for freshman sire Lunarpal.

Ridden by Gerard Melancon, Derickhand covered the distance in 1:00.53 in his career debut for Brinkman, who also trains the colt. He is one of eight winners from as many starters out of the Grade 2-winning Zuppardo’s Prince mare Astas Foxy Lady. Derickland is a half brother to stakes winner Daytime Robbery.

Lunarpal won four of six starts, including the 2004 editions of the Bashford Manor (G3) and Kentucky Breeders’ Cup (G3) Stakes, and the Three Chimneys Juvenile Stakes, all at Churchill Downs.

Lunarpal stood for $2,500 this season at Le Mesa Stallions in Carenco, Louisiana, and has 23 two-year-olds in his first crop. The seven-year-old Successful Appeal horse is out of the winning Quiet American mare Quiet Eclipse. He is a half brother to stakes winners Lunargal and Lunarlady.
