Lawyer Ron, the champion older male of 2007, was euthanized on Friday following complications due to colic surgery.

The six-year-old Langfuhr horse out of Donation, by Lord Avie, was standing his second season at Stonewall Farm Stallions in Lexington. He stood for a $25,000 fee.

“Not only was he a superior racehorse horse but his physical presence and contagious personality captivated everyone that saw him,” said Clark Shepherd, manager of Stonewall Farm Stallions. “His first foals are tremendous. When breeders call in to report their Lawyer Ron foals being born, they all have a story to tell. This is obviously a huge loss for us, as well as for the racing and breeding community.”

Lawyer Ron won the Eclipse Award as champion older male after securing wins in the Whitney Handicap (G1), Woodward Stakes (G1), and Oaklawn Handicap (G2) during his four-year-old season for trainer Todd Pletcher. He also finished second to Horse of the Year Curlin in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) that year.

As a three-year-old he won the Southwest and Rebel (G3) Stakes as well as the Arkansas Derby (G2) before finishing 12th to Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

Bred in Kentucky by James T. Hines Jr., Lawyer Ron won 12 of 26 career races and earned $2,790,008.
