The margin of victory was the only major change as William S. Farish’s Lane’s End in Versailles, Kentucky, led the way for the tenth time in the annual THOROUGHBRED TIMES ranking of North American stud farms.
Improving on its 2007 results, Lane’s End finished first in five of the eight categories that measure the quality and consistency of stallion progeny in ‘08, in addition to factoring in number of opportunities through percentage statistics.
In the money race, Lane’s End scored a clear win with $82,044,068 in combined progeny earnings, which was $15,215,043 ahead of the next best total. In 2007, Lane’s End finished in front by $12,795,665.
Lane’s End was also the leader by number of wins, by number of winners, by number of stakes winners, and by number of graded stakes winners.
Lane’s End stallion Smart Strike became the first back-to-back leading sire since Storm Cat in 1999 and 2000, while his top son, Curlin, garnered Horse of the Year honors for the second straight year.
The highlights kept coming away from the racetrack when Lane’s End added Curlin to the stallion roster for the 2009 season.
Rounding out the top ten based on combined progeny earnings in 2008 were Ashford Stud, Darley, Three Chimneys Farm, Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms, Airdrie Stud, Vinery, Claiborne Farm, Gainesway, and Taylor Made Stallions.
