Singletary bags first winner with Mikeswayorthehiway

Mikeswayorthehiway closed from off the pace under Joel Rosario and drove to a three-quarter-length score in the sixth race on Monday at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park meeting to become the first career winner for 2004 NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Singletary.

Trained by Mike Mitchell for owner Tommy Huttons Dream Stable, the dark bay or brown gelding completed the one-mile maiden claiming race in 1:39.86 on the synthetic Pro-Ride surface. Bred in California by Mitchell and Bob Hutton, Mikeswayorthehiway is out of the winning Coronado’s Quest mare Feed the Kitty and is a half brother to Justdontcallmejeri, who finished third in this year’s Tampa Bay Derby (G3).

A nine-year-old by Sultry Song out of the Star de Naskra mare Joiski’s Star, Singletary stood the 2009 season for an advertised fee of $2,500 at Harris Farms in Coalinga, California. He has 41 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Campaigned during his racing career by Little Red Feather Racing, Singletary won eight of 22 career starts and earned $1,754,312. A seven-time stakes winner, Singletary also won the 2003 La Jolla Stakes (G3), the ’04 San Francisco Breeders’ Cup Mile (G2), and the Arcadia Handicap (G2) and Oak Tree Breeders’ Cup Mile Stakes (G2) in ’05.
