Mafita gives Gemma’s Star first career victory
Two-year-old filly Mafita won the fifth race at Retama Park on Friday to give her sire Gemma’s Star his first winner.
The maiden special weight race at one mile on the turf drew a field of 12. Mafita was unhurried early and launched a five-wide rally on the far turn. She powered to the front in midstretch and won by 1¼ lengths. Mafita completed the distance in 1:37.84 on firm turf.
Mafita is out of the winning Luhuk mare Prejuzgada (Arg). She was bred in Florida by Peruvian Glass & More Inc.
Gemma’s Star, a ten-year-old by End Sweep out of the Private Account mare Acccounting Lady, will stand the 2010 season at Fanlew Farms in Sarepta, Louisiana, for an advertised fee of $1,000.
Gemma’s Star won six of 31 starts from 2001 through ’03, including two stakes, and earned $166,305.
