Pensioned sire Lear Fan dead at 27

Posted: Wednesday, September 24, 2008 6:30 PM

Lear Fan, the pensioned sire of 80 stakes winners, died this summer from natural causes at Gainesway Farm in Lexington. He was 27.

In carrying on the legacy of his sire, the late Gainesway stallion Roberto, Lear Fan sired champions Ryafan and Windsharp and top performers throughout the racing world, including 2007 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile (HK-G1) winner Good Ba Ba.

“Lear Fan has been a source of pride for Gainesway,” farm President Antony Beck said when Lear Fan was pensioned in 2004. “He had an outstanding career as both a racehorse and sire, and we have been honored to have him at the farm.”

A French Group 1 winner for owner Ahmed bin Salman, Lear Fan stood each of his 20 seasons at Gainesway. He sired 526 winners from 742 starters that earned $53,907,374 through Wednesday.

Other Grade or Group 1 winners by Lear Fan include Italian classic winner Sikeston, French classic winner Tiraaz, Loup Solitaire, Sarafan, Labeeb (GB), and Vacare.
