Royal Minikin first winner for freshman sire Tomahawk

Posted: Saturday, May 31, 2008 10:34 PM

Royal Minikin set the tempo throughout while under pressure, shook clear in upper stretch, and was fully extended to win in the fourth race on Saturday at Woodbine and become the first winner for freshman sire Tomahawk.

The dark bay or brown colt out of stakes-placed winner Regalclass, by Regal Classic, tallied by a comfortable 1¼ lengths under Emile Ramsammy. He covered the 4½-furlong maiden special weight race in :53.58 on the synthetic Polytrack surface for trainer Anne Cameron and owner-breeder John Terdik.

Tomahawk is an eight-year-old by Seattle Slew out of Grade 3 winner Statuette, by Pancho Villa. He stands for $8,553 ($8,500 Canadian) at Park Stud in Orangeville, Ontario, and has 53 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Ireland's highweighted two-year-old colt of 2002, Tomahawk finished second in both the ‘02 Darley Dewhurst Stakes (Eng-G1) and Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes (Eng-G1) and eighth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) for trainer Aidan O'Brien. Overall, he won three of 14 career starts, including the 2003 Oak Lodge Sires Loughbrown Stakes at the Curragh, and earned $245,963.
