Sabino first winner for freshman sire Stroll

Posted: Sunday, May 18, 2008 6:47 PM

William and Tammy Fox’s Sabino led at every point of call en route to a 13½-length triumph in the first race at Churchill Downs on Sunday to become the first winner for Grade 1 winner and freshman sire Stroll.

Bred in Kentucky by Lantern Hill Farm and trained by Dale Romans, Sabino is out of the winning Woodman mare Say You’ll Stay. The bay colt covered five furlongs in :59.51 under a hand ride from Robby Albarado in the maiden claiming race.

Stroll is an eight-year-old by Pulpit out of Group 3-placed winner Maid for Walking (GB), by Prince Sabo. He stands privately at Azienda Agricola Mediterranea in Italy. He has 37 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Stroll won the 2004 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs before a strained suspensory ligament forced his retirement later that season. He retired with seven wins in 16 career starts, including four straight stakes victories in 2003: the Lamplighter Stakes at Monmouth Park, the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Handicap (G2) at Saratoga Race Course, the Jamaica Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park, and the Calder Derby (G3) at Calder Race Course. The Claiborne Farm homebred earned $795,071 in three seasons.
