Live Oak foundation mare Sultry Sun euthanized

Posted: Saturday, March 08, 2008 3:29 PM

Sultry Sun, a foundation mare for Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Stud, was euthanized due to the infirmities of old age. She was 28.

By Buckfinder out of the winning Damascus mare Sunny Dame, Sultry Sun produced multiple Grade 1 winner and sire Sultry Song, multiple Grade 1 winner Solar Splendor, and Grade 3 winner and sire Strategic Mission.

Sultry Sun has produced ten winners from 13 starters.

“She has been the foundation blue hen for Live Oak over the years, and she will be greatly missed,” Weber said.

Sultry Sun’s final foal, El Sultry Sun, has won one of two starts. A chestnut colt by Eltish, El Sultry Sun was born in 2005.

Sultry Sun, a half sister to multiple stakes winner and multiple stakes producer Lien, won nine of 14 career starts and earned $222,277 in two seasons. The Live Oak homebred won the 1984 Molly Pitcher Handicap (G2) and Coconut Grove Stakes, and went on to make a lasting impact in the breeding shed.

Sultry Sun’s second foal, Solar Splendor, won 11 of 42 starts, including the 1991 Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (G1) and the ’91 and ’92 editions of the Man o’ War Stakes (G1). A Majestic Light gelding, Solar Splendor amassed $1,386,468 in earnings during a six-year career.

The third foal produced by Sultry Sun was Sultry Song, winner of the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1), Woodward Stakes (G1), and Whitney Handicap (G1) in 1992. By Cox’s Ridge, Sultry Song concluded his career with nine wins in 23 starts and banked $1,616,276 in purse earnings. He went on to a successful career at stud, siring 1998 Canadian champion three-year-old filly Kirby’s Song and 2004 NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Singletary among 258 winners in 12 crops of racing age. His 344 starters have amassed purse earnings of $20,211,789.

Sultry Sun also produced Grade 3 winner Strategic Mission, sire of two-time Grade 1 winner Showing Up, and winner Sultry Allure, dam of Grade 1 winner Mass Media.
