MISS ALLEGED

Miss Alleged, the 1991 champion turf female and Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) winner, died on February 29 in Ireland from foaling complications. She was 21.

The Alleged mare delivered a healthy Miesque’s Son colt.

“It’s very unfortunate,” owner Issam Fares said on Tuesday. “She gave birth to a wonderful colt and then had some problems and passed away the next day. She was very, very special—a great lady.”

Fares had sent Miss Alleged from his farm in France to be bred at Coolmore Stud in Ireland. In 2007, she produced a Peintre Celebre filly who was bred in France in the name of Fares’s S. C. E. A. Haras de Manneville.

Trained by Pascal Bary, Miss Alleged was winless in six starts as a four-year-old prior to the 1991 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs. Coupled with two other horses in the mutuel field at odds of 42.10-to-1, she wore down champion males Itsallgreektome and Sky Classic in the stretch for a half-length victory that placed her alongside Pebbles (GB) as the only female winners of the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Miss Alleged joined Charlie Whittingham’s barn in Southern California after the Breeders’ Cup and scored another Grade 1 victory about a month later in the Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes (G1), in which she again defeated Itsallgreektome.

Bred in Kentucky by Carl Freeman, Miss Alleged also won the 1990 Prix de Malleret (Fr-G2) and Prix de Royaumont (Fr-G3). She was France’s highweighted older female between 11 and 14 furlongs in 1991.

Fares bought Miss Alleged for $250,000 at the 1988 Keeneland July selected yearling sale.

As a broodmare, she has produced two winners from six starters, including French stakes winner Zghorta. Her first foal, a Danzig colt named Joshua Dancer, brought $950,000 as the highest-priced colt at the 1995 Keeneland July yearling sale. Joshua Dancer, winless in three career starts, stands in South Africa.
