Irish champion Kahyasi, a dual classic winner who sired Eclipse Award-winning steeplechaser Hirapour (Ire) and prominent broodmare Hasili (Ire), died on Thursday in France due to a tumor. He was 23.
By Ile de Bourbon out of stakes winner Kadissya, by Blushing Groom (Fr), Kahyasi was a half brother to Italian highweight Kadaka (Ire) and English Group 3 winner Kaliana. He won five of seven starts in two seasons for owner-breeder the Aga Khan.
In 1988, Kahyasi won the Calor Derby Trial Stakes (Eng-G3), the Ever Ready Epsom Derby (Eng-G1), and the Budweiser Irish Derby (Ire-G1). Trained by Luca Cumani, Kahyasi was Ireland’s champion three-year-old colt.
Kahyasi was retired to stud after his three-year-old season and stood for the Aha Khan in Ireland at Gilltown Stud in 1989. He was transferred in 2000 to his owner’s Haras de Bonneval in France, where he stood the 2008 season for $9,221 (6,000 euros).
Kahyasi sired Hirapour (Ire), the 2004 Eclipse Award winner as champion steeplechaser, and Australian champion hurdler Karasi, three-time winner of the Nakayama Grand Jump.
Other prominent offspring include Zainta and Vereva, winners of the 1997 and ’98 Prix de Diane Hermes (Fr-G1) (French Oaks), and Grade 1 or Group 1 winners Choc Ice (Ire) and Khalkevi.
Kahyasi also is the sire of French stakes winner Hasili, the 2006 Broodmare of the Year in England. Hasili produced Group 2 winner and leading French sire Dansili (GB), champions Banks Hill (GB) and Intercontinental (GB), multiple Grade 1 winners Heat Haze (GB) and Cacique (Ire), and multiple graded/group winner Champs Elysees (GB) from seven starters.
In 17 crops of racing age, Kahyasi is the sire of 324 winners from 477 starters that have earned $27,678,922, through Saturday.
