Prominent Canadian sire Ascot Knight dead

Prominent Canadian sire Ascot Knight, who was among Canada’s leading sires from 1997-’99 and 2001-’02, was euthanized on February 8 due to declining health at Windfields Farm.
The 24-year-old Danzig horse, out of the winning Better Bee mare Bambee T. T., was buried at the Ontario, Canada farm’s equine cemetery beside Northern Dancer, Vice Regent, and other former Windfields residents.
Ascot Knight has sired 365 winners, including 33 stakes winners, from 537 starters in 17 crops of racing age. His progeny have earned $28,493,716 through Sunday.
His top foals include 1994 Canadian champion older mare Pennyhill Park; 1997 Man o’ War Stakes (G1) and Caesars International Handicap (G1) winner Influent; multiple graded stakes winner Hey Hazel; 1994 Canadian Oaks winner Plenty of Sugar; 2000 Canadian Derby (Can-G3), Manitoba Derby (Can-G3), and Alberta Derby (Can-G3) winner Scotman; and Grade 2 winner Ascot Yael.
A $1.4-million purchase at the 1985 Keeneland July yearling sale, Ascot Knight secured two wins, three seconds, and two thirds from ten career starts. He won the 1987 Mecca Bookmakers’ Scottish Derby Stakes in England and finished second in the Matchmaker International Stakes (Eng-G1) and Mecca-Dante Stakes (Eng-G2).
Bred in Ontario by R. M. Anderson, Ascot Knight is a full brother to champion Petit Loup and a half brother to 1984 Canadian champion grass horse Bounding Away and Grade 3-placed stakes winner Overreaction.
