Need a Name first winner for Sir Cherokee

Need a Name opened a one-length lead in early stretch and drew clear in the closing strides of a 2 1/4-length debut win in the sixth race on Saturday at Churchill Downs to become the first winner for freshman sire Sir Cherokee.

Merrill Scherer trains Need a Name, and co-owns the bay gelding out of the winning Lost Code mare Lost Command along with Gus Goldsmith. Need a Name completed five-furlong maiden claiming race in :59.55 on a fast track.

Sir Cherokee stands for $7,500 at Crestwood Farm in Lexington. The Cherokee Run horse out of the unraced Last Tycoon (Ire) mare La Cucina (Ire) has 31 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Multiple graded stakes winner Sir Cherokee concluded his racing career in 2004 with six wins in 19 career starts and $628,296 in earnings. The bay horse earned his first stakes win in the 2003 Arkansas Derby (G2) for trainer Michael Tomlinson and owner-breeder Domino Stud of Lexington. He also won the ’04 Ack Ack (G3) and MAXXAM Gold Cup Handicaps.
