Border Cuvee first winner for freshman sire Cuvee

Border Cuvee drew clear in the stretch and earned a three-length debut win in a $21,000 maiden special weight race on Thursday at Lone Star Park to become the first winner for freshman sire Cuvee.

Grade 1 winner Cuvee stands for $10,000 at Gainesway in Lexington. The seven-year-old Carson City horse out of Christmas Star, by Star de Naskra, has 115 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Steve Asmussen trained Cuvee and also trains Border Cuvee. Winchell Thoroughbreds’ and Spendthrift Farm’s Cuvee concluded his racing career in 2004 with four wins in nine starts and $402,044 in purse earnings.

A half brother to Grade 2 winner Will He Shine, Cuvee earned his first stakes win in the 2003 Kentucky Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs. The chestnut horse also posted consecutive wins in the 2003 Futurity Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park and Saratoga Special Stakes (G2).
