Fashionita first winner for freshman sire Popular

Fashionita gained command at the start and earned a two-length victory on Friday at the Solano County Fair to become the first winner for Grade 3 winner and freshman sire Popular.

Trained by Greg James for owners-breeders Rod and Lorraine Rodriguez, Fashionita ran 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.28 on a fast track. The chestnut filly is one of two winners from as many starters out of stakes winner Ivy Lane, by Devil On Ice.

Popular stands for a private fee at Cottonwood Creek Ranch in Cottonwood, California. A nine-year-old Saint Ballado horse out of Western Lady, by Gone West, Popular has 15 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Popular concluded his racing career in 2003 with two wins from 15 starts and $155,845 in earnings. The dark bay or brown horse won the ’02 San Miguel Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park for trainer Bob Baffert and owner-breeder The Thoroughbred Corp.

Popular also finished second in the ’01 Hollywood Prevue Stakes (G3).
