New York-based sire Manlove euthanized

by Jeff Apel

Stakes winner Manlove, a New York-based stallion who was the sire of multiple Grade 3 winner Proud Man and Grade 3 winner Gal O Gal, was euthanized on July 11 due to neurological problems associated with old age. He was 21.

The Mr. Prospector horse out of multiple graded stakes-placed multiple stakes winner Thirty Flags, by Hoist the Flag, was buried in his paddock at Foggy Bottom Farm in Geneseo, New York, where he stood since 2005 as the property of the estate of Max Hugel.

“I think that’s kind of nice,” said Beverly Least, Foggy Bottom Farm’s owner. “He’s able to overlook all the mares and the stallions that he seemed to think he was better than.”

Physical problems limited Manlove to covering two mares this year. Least said the bay horse did not show as much interest as usual when he was introduced to his last mare, but otherwise appeared to be healthy until suffering a possible stroke on July 11 that prevented him from standing.

“I would assume it was a stroke, but it shows as a neurological problem. That’s what the vet called it,“ Least said. “It took him down. We couldn’t get him up and we euthanized him.”

A half brother to multiple graded stakes winner Dixie Flag, Manlove entered stud in 1993 and was the sire of 191 foals in 14 crops that compiled $6,325,984 in earnings through Wednesday. His progeny included Proud Man, a career earner of $1,034,520 who captured the ’01 Palm Beach (G3), Hill Prince (G3), and Everglades (G3) Stakes and Tropical Park Derby (G3).

Manlove also sired Gal O Gal, the ’03 Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3) winner, Bo Mag, a Group 3 winner in Singapore, and Brooklyn Bandit, a stakes winner in Puerto Rico. Manlove stood for an advertised fee of $2,500 since ’07.

Manlove concluded his racing career in ‘92 with six wins in 22 starts and $169,625 for trainer Ben Perkins Jr. and owner Bohemia Stable. Bred in Maryland by Mrs. Richard duPoint, Manlove earned his lone stakes win in the 1991 Congressional Handicap at Laurel Park.
