Darley acquires shares in Distorted Humor

Posted: Thursday, September 06, 2007 3:24 PM

Darley has acquired a number of shares in popular sire Distorted Humor from WinStar Farm with the intent of breeding off those shares throughout his career.

"Darley's involvement will further enhance Distorted Humor's legacy as a great sire," said Doug Cauthen, syndicate manager and president of WinStar Farm.

The 14-year-old Forty Niner horse out of the Danzig mare Danzig’s Beauty, stood the 2007 season at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, for $225,000.

Distorted Humor is the sire of 316 winners, including 25 graded stakes winners and 59 stakes winners, from 426 starters. His progeny have earned $39,883,054 through Wednesday.

Distorted Humor’s leading performers include 2003 champion and dual classic winner Funny Cide; Puerto Rican champion older horse Don Dandy; and Grade 1 winners Flower Alley, Awesome Humor, Commentator, Fourty Niners Son, and Hystericalady.

Less than a month ago, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Darley announced its plans to stand Distorted Humor’s leading earner of 2007, Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) winner Any Given Saturday.

Any Given Saturday, out of the A.P. Indy mare Weekend in Indy, will continue to race for WinStar Farm and Padua Stables through the Breeders’ Cup Classic Powered by Dodge (G1) on October 27 at Monmouth Park.

Campaigned by R. L. Reineman and Prestonwood Farms and trained by W. Elliot Walden, Distorted Humor won eight of 23 career starts, including the 1998 Commonwealth Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Race Course, the Churchill Downs (G2) and Ack Ack (G3) Handicaps at Churchill Downs, and the ’97 Salvator Mile Handicap (G3) at Monmouth Park. He earned $769,964 over three racing seasons before entering stud in 1999.

Distorted Humor currently is North America's co-leading sire of stakes winners with A.P. Indy, who each have 16 individual stakes winners through September 1.
