Dermot and Perle O’Rourke’s Plantation Stud purchased Silver Springs Stud in Paris, Kentucky on Sunday.
Established in 1983 by the late John Costelloe and his wife, Moya, Silver Spring Stud encompasses 220 acres of Bluegrass land.
Silver Spring Stud was home to multiple Grade 3 winner and leading sire Elusive Quality, by Gone West, and his dam, the unraced Hero’s Honor mare Touch of Greatness.
Elusive Quality is the sire of 2004 champion three-year-old colt and dual classic winner Smarty Jones. Elusive Quality stands at Darley in Lexington for $100,000.
Plantation Stud, located in Exning, Newmarket, Suffolk, England, was purchased by the O’Roarke’s in July 2005. It was formed in 1958 by John, 9th Lord Howard de Walden and Seaford.
“We are in the market for a Group 1 winner in 2007, and we will be building up our stallion base following upon the success of Araafa in his first season,” Plantation Stud’s Chief Executive Kevin Buckley said. “We will have 22 yearlings this year to allocate to our various trainers, and we may decide to have some runners in American next year.”
Plantation Stud currently has horses in training in Australia, France, England, and Ireland.
