French-based stallion Kendor dead at 21

Posted: Sunday, June 10, 2007 5:51 PM

Prominent French stallion Kendor died on Wednesday at age 21 after a severe hemorrhage at Haras de la Reboursiere et de Montaigu in Nonant le Pin, where he stood his entire career.

A French champion and classic winner, Kendor is the sire of 33 stakes winners, including English Group 1 winner and French-based freshman sire Keltos and French Group 1 winner Charge d’Affaires (GB), a Grade 2 winner in the United Stakes. His son Literato finished second in the Prix du Jockey-Club Mitsubishi Motors (Fr-G1) (French Derby).

Other top performers include group or graded stakes winners Nombre Premier, Bonapartiste (Fr), Nec Plus Ultra, Historie Sainte (Fr), Kendor Dine, Centifolia, Grey Risk, Armed for Action, Latona, and Bugia

From 635 foals in 15 crops of racing age, the gray horse has sired 311 winners from 470 starters that have earned $20,813,844 through Saturday. He stood in 2007 for approximately $16,000 (12,000 euros).

By Kenmare out of the Gay Mecene mare Belle Mecene, Kendor won the 1988 Grand Criterium (Fr-G1) at Longchamp and Prix de Cabourg (G3) at Deauville and was named France’s champion two-year-old that season.

Kendor captured the 1989 Dubai Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Fr-G1) (French Two Thousand Guineas) and the Prix de Fontainebleau (Fr-G3) the following season at the Parisian racecourse and finished second in the Prix Jean Prat (Fr-G1) there for owner-breeder Adolf Bader. He concluded his career with a record of five wins in nine starts and earnings of $574,588.
