Delayed Start first winner for freshman sire Lido Palace

Posted: Friday, July 20, 2007 8:46 PM

Delayed Start led at every point of call en route to a two-length victory on Friday at Calder Race Course to become the first career winner for multiple Grade 1 winner and Florida-based freshman sire Lido Palace (Chi).

Trained by Kirk Ziadie for owner Chester A. Bishop, the two-year-old bay filly completed the 5 ½-furlong maiden claiming race in 1:07.17 on a fast track. Out of the unraced Salt Lake mare Tooosalty, Florida-bred Delayed Start is a half sister to Puerto Rican champion imported two-year-old colt Salty’s Glider and stakes winner Cupid Season.

Lido Palace, a ten-year-old by Rich Man’s Gold out of Sonada (Chi), by Quick Decision, stood this season for $5,000 at Roy Lerman’s Lambholm South in Fairfield, Florida. He has 47 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Lido Palace won four Group 1 races in Chile en route to championship honors as a two-year-old of 2000 and Horse of the Year of 2001 at three.

John and Jerry Amerman purchased him privately during his three-year-old campaign and he won five of 11 starts in two seasons in the United States, including three Grade 1 events. He scored the richest win of his career in the 2001 Whitney Handicap (G1) and followed with the first of back-to-back triumphs in the Woodward Stakes (G1) [2001 and '02] at Belmont Park. Overall, he won 11 of 23 career starts and earned $2,705,865.
