Stakes winner Fly North, who produced 2002 champion three-year-old filly Farda Amiga, died recently at age 14.

Kentucky-bred Fly North was euthanized at owner-breeder Virginia Kraft Payson’s Payson Stud in Lexington on July 11.

Payson could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

Fly North is by Pleasant Colony and out of the Temperence Hill mare Dry North, who is a half sister to European champion, classic winner, and sire St. Jovite.

Second dam Northern Sunset (Ire), by Northfields, also produced Grade 2 winners and sires Salem Drive and Lac Ouimet, along with the Grade 3-winning gelding L’Carriere.

Fly North won three of eight starts, including the 1995 Ontario Debutante Stakes at Fort Erie, and earned $114,027 for Payson and trainer Roger Attfield.

Her second foal, Farda Amiga, by Broad Brush, won four of eight starts and earned $1,282,302. She won the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and the Alabama Stakes (G1) in her championship year.

Fly North delivered fillies by Fusaichi Pegasus and Giant’s Causeway in 2006 and ’07, respectively. She was bred to Fusaichi Pegasus this year.
