South Africa’s leading freshman sire dies

Camden Park, an A.P. Indy horse who led South Africa’s freshman sire list last season, died on June 21. He was nine.

The Kentucky-bred horse out of Danzig Island, by Danzig, died from toxic shock after developing a tear in his cecum, said Jennifer Mackenzie of Hemel ‘n Aarde Stud in Hermanus, South Africa.

Camden Park is the sire of Jay Peg, one of the country’s leading three-year-olds. Winner of the Bloodstock South Africa Cape Guineas (SAf-G1) and Investec Cape Derby (SAf-G1), Jay Peg is entered in the prestigious Durban July Handicap (SAf-G1) on Saturday at Greyville.

Bred by Lazy E Ranch Inc., Camden Park finished fourth to Balto Star in the 2001 Turfway Spiral Stakes (G2) for trainer Elliott Walden and owners Mark Stanley and John Veith. He won two of six career starts and earned $78,710.
