Multiple Grade 1 winner Angara retired, booked to Montjeu

The Sangster family’s Swettenham Stud has retired multiple Grade 1 winner Angara (GB) and shipped her to Ireland to be bred to Montjeu (Ire).

The six-year-old Alzao mare out of Ange Blue, by Alleged, won the 2005 Beverly D. Stakes (G1) at Arlington Park and ’06 Diana Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course. She finished eighth in the E. P. Taylor Stakes (Can-G1) on October 22 at Woodbine in her final start.

Mark Glyer, Swettenham’s American director, confirmed the breeding plans.

Swettenham purchased Angara privately from Martin Schwartz after she failed to meet her reserve on a $2.2-million final bid in the 2005 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale.

Bred by Dayton Investments Ltd., Angara won six of 21 career starts and earned $1,101,700.
