Commander in Chief, winner of the Ever Ready Epsom Derby (Eng-G1) and Budweiser Irish Derby (Ire-G1), was euthanized on June 12 after fracturing his leg in a paddock accident at Yushun Stallion Station in Japan.

The 17-year-old horse by Dancing Brave out of Slightly Dangerous, by Roberto, had covered 90 mares this season.

Commander in Chief spent his entire stud career at the Hokkaido farm. He sired 227 winners from 665 starters that earned $87,630,880 through Wednesday. His 15 stakes winners include 1997 Japanese champion two-year-old filly Ein Bride.

Bred and raced by Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms, Commander in Chief won five of his six career starts and earned $1,311,514 for trainer Henry Cecil. His lone loss was a third-place finish to Opera House (GB) in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Eng-G1) in his final start.

Commander in Chief is a half brother to four stakes winners, including champion Warning (GB) and Grade 1 winner and Irish classic-placed Yashmak. He was honored as Europe’s champion three-year-old colt of 1993.
