New York sire Raise a Man dies at 30

Raise a Man, a Grade 2 winner and sire of 24 stakes winners, died of natural causes on July 22 at Milfer Farm in Unadilla, New York. He was 30.

The pensioned Raise a Native horse out of Delta Sal, by Delta Judge, sired South African champions Whistling Dixie and Splendid Ann and eight other graded or group stakes winners from 390 starters who earned $12,704,810 through Sunday. Vinnie the Viper, a seven-time stakes winner in the late 1980s, was one of his top runners in the United States.

Bred in Kentucky, Raise a Man won the 1980 San Felipe Handicap (G2) and San Vicente Stakes (G3). He also won a division of the ’81 Malibu Stakes (G2) for owner Northwest Farms. Raise a Man posted six wins in 12 career starts and earned $257,450.

Jonathan H.F. Davis, D.V.M., acquired Raise a Man from Gainesway Farm in 1989. Raise a Man, who stood his first season at Milfer in 1990, was pensioned in March.
