Northern Baby, sire of champion Possibly Perfect, euthanized at Stone Farm

Retired stallion Northern Baby was euthanized on Wednesday due to the infirmities of old age at Arthur B. Hancock’s Stone Farm in Paris, Kentucky. He was 31.

Northern Baby, by Northern Dancer out of the Round Table mare Two Rings, stood at the farm from 1982 until he was pensioned in 2001. He was buried at the farm.

Overall, Northern Baby sired four champions and 47 stakes winners from his 21 crops. His leading runners include 1995 champion turf female and six-time Grade 1 stakes winner Possibly Perfect, 1989 champion steeplechaser Highland Bud, 1994 champion steeplechaser Warm Spell, French champion miler Thrill Show, and Grade or Group 1 winners Live the Dream, Deposit Ticket, Double Wedge, Rampage, Michelozzo, and Bairn.

Bred in Canada by Kinghaven Farm, Northern Baby was purchased for $120,000 in the name of Horse France at the 1977 Keeneland July yearling sale.

Racing for Anne-Marie d’Estainville and trained by Francois Boutin, he finished third in the 1979 Epsom Derby (Eng-G1) and won the Champion Stakes (Eng-G1) that same year. Overall, he won five of 17 starts and placed second or third in seven other races while earning $329,983.

Northern Baby was retired to stud for the 1981 season at Airlie Stud in Ireland and came to Stone Farm for the 1982 breeding season.
