Champion Queena was euthanized due to complications from colic at Helen Alexander’s Middlebrook Farm in Lexington. She was 21.

Bred and raced by Emory Hamilton, Queena won ten of 17 career starts and earned $565,024 in two seasons.

By Mr. Prospector out of Grade 1 winner Too Chic, by Blushing Groom (Fr), Queena began her racing career as a four-year-old and won five of nine starts for trainer Shug McGaughey, including the First Flight Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park.

Queena reeled off five consecutive victories as a five-year-old in 1991, including wins in the Vagrancy Handicap (G3), Ballerina Stakes (G1), Maskette Stakes (G1), and Ruffian Handicap (G1), en route to the Eclipse Award as champion older female.

A half sister to Grade 1 winner Chic Shirine, Queena was retired following a fifth-place finish in the 1991 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1).

After her retirement, Queena produced five winners from six starters. She is the dam of Grade 1 winner and sire Brahms and Grade 3 winner La Reina. She was bred to Ghostzapper during the past breeding season but was not in foal at the time of her death.

Queena was buried at Middlebrook near Too Chic.
