Washington broodmare of the year Outofthebluebell dead
Griffin Place’s stakes winner Outofthebluebell, who was named 2000 Washington broodmare of the year, died on August 23 due to complications from a strangulated small intestine. She was 22.
Out of the winning Star Envoy mare Natchez Bluebell, Outofthebluebell produced six winners from eight starters, including 2000 Ashland Stakes (G1) winner Rings a Chime.
The Metfield filly became the fifth Washington-bred to win a Grade 1 race when she won the Ashland. Rings a Chime finished second in that year’s Kentucky Oaks (G1) and Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3) and was third in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G1) en route to Washington horse of the year honors in 2000.
Outofthebluebell’s progeny have earned $955,201 through Wednesday.
Campaigned by Woodrow D. Marriott and trained by Paul Darjean, Outofthebluebell secured eight wins, seven seconds, and six third-place finishes from 36 career starts over three seasons to earn $195,966. Her most lucrative victory came in the $25,000 Matt Winn Handicap in 1988 at Balmoral Park in Illinois.
Outofthebluebell was a $17,000 purchase by Terry and Mary Lou Griffin at the 1993 Keeneland November mixed sale while in foal to Time for a Change. Outofthebluebell will be cremated and buried at Griffin Place.
